Bridging the gender gap: Tackling women’s inequality

Gender equality is not simply a fundamental human right – it’s also recognized as a vital building block for economic growth and the wider development of society, and is embodied in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It was also a key topic at the 2012 UN General Assembly where they focused on women’s access to justice. Encouragingly, many governments and agencies are making concerted efforts to reduce the gender gap, which in some cases means overcoming centuries of entrenched perceptions about women’s role in society. By viewing the three life stages of childhood, adulthood and old age, this KPMG paper takes an in-depth look at the issues contributing to inequality and considers existing and potential solutions, pulling on extensive research from around the world.
