Launch of a global rally for women’s economic empowerment
"Congratulations on hosting a successful webinar today. It was great hearing from the Knowledge Gateway Team and fellow volunteers. We are all geared up to work for this noble cause," said Tejas Jain—a committed and dedicated community champion for women’s economic empowerment in India—in his remarks during the orientation webinar.
This orientation webinar was hosted on 14 October 2013 to welcome the 150 women and men who had responded to the Knowledge Gateway call for Global Community Champions. The webinar kicked off a global rally for women’s economic empowerment on the Knowledge Gateway; and provided the volunteers with an overview of women’s economic empowerment, the Knowledge Gateway platform; as well as with an overview of the expectations for their online and offline community engagement.
The call for global community champions was made on 23 September at the time of the Knowledge Gateway global launch. The call generated applications from over 150 dynamic and enthusiastic women and men from the private sector, civil society, academia and national and international organizations in all regions.
During the one-month rally (14 October to 14 November) the volunteers will show their commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment in their local communities. During this period, they will have access to expert-led webinars to help facilitate their online campaigns and advocacy initiatives. At the end of the rally, 20-25 Global Community Champions will be selected to work closely with the Knowledge Gateway Team during five months.“I believe the platform is the place to learn, share and collaborate for social change,” said Esther Eshiet from Nigeria. “Thanks for the welcome and this opportunity is revolutionizing for me,” said Marie Angele Abanga from Cameroon.
