Nawsheen Ahmine is a barrister-at-law involved in areas of civil, corporate and employment law and arbitration among others. She is also involved in training and she is a qualified trainer with the Mauritius Qualifications Authority, as well as the PO and Manager of a training institution.
Women empowerment is important because it makes women become more confident and have more control over their lives. Also, women empowerment benefits the country economically and it also contributes towards the development of the society. As President Obama said “When women succeed, nations are more safe, secure and prosperous.”
The legal profession in Mauritius is predominantly a male one. Women in the legal field in Mauritius sometimes do not get the same respect as the male lawyers do from our confreres. We are sometimes subjected to certain comments, just because we are women, which makes us feel uncomfortable. She has been compared to male lawyers as being less committed to her career because as a woman, she is expected to only care about her family and not to focus on her profession.
This is why she uses these comments as a motivation to overcome obstacles that are thrown her way and it makes her more determined to succeed.
Her advice to young women would be to believe in themselves, work hard, be honest in their work and not to be discouraged by negative comments.
