Bio
If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a nation. (African proverb, also attributed to other notable figures Bill Gates).
I am Dr Annah Bengesai, a social scientist based in Durban, South Africa. I am passionate about the primacy of education in empowering women, both formal, through the schooling system and informal. As a researcher, I am particularly interested demographic analysis in areas such as educational transitions for girls, reproductive health, and violence against girls and women and how this affects teaching and learning. I believe when a woman is educated, she can conquer the world. As part of my community engagement, I visit rural schools in South Africa to encourage both young girls and boys to pursue their dreams. I also coordinate projects where young people struggling in Maths and Science school subjects get extra tuition. More information about my interests can be found on my Facebook Page: It starts with a girl: creating safer and healthier transitions. found on the following url: https://www.facebook.com/safertransitions/.
