Human Rights Day

December 10 is Human Rights Day! The UN Commission on Human Rights, of which Eleanor Roosevelt was one of its members, was formed in 1946 to ensure fundamental rights for all human beings world-wide. December 10 remembers the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 10 December is indeed a day of great significance as it formalized human right and turned it into a right in the real sense. It marks the adoption of the UDHR. Right to a dignified life stands atop of every other human rights. And the biggest challenge faced by the human rights advocate around the world is to ensure right of each and everyone in the globe to a dignified life.

Despite the adoption of UDHR and other international human rights instruments like ICCPR, ICESCR, CEDAW, CRC..., there are still many human rights violations in the world. Human rights protection needs commitment on the part of each state and change of attitude in the society. Nevertheless, December 10 is still an important day and it is a turning point in the global human rights system.
