The social construction of "Womanhood"
The gender role of woman has historically been defined and which usually connotes a derogatory and negative position of woman. While men and women are biologically different, their social roles are constructed based on this biological differences. Gender-based abuse and discrimination is often sanctioned or tolerated by society that perceives it as a means of teaching "untruly" wives or daughters to be obedient. The legal injustice on the weaker sex is extensive. Why are women still ear-marked for soft jobs like typists, air hostesses and nurses? While they have the capability to be Prime Ministers, Highly talented professionals and Confident cosmonauts. Today. not tomorrow, we men and women must declare war on injustice to womankind by demanding for real partnership and special provisions. Women are not alone. Men must share the concern because it is a battle against the
socio-economic exploitation. We must mobilize all sections to actualize social injustice. My plea may sound aggressive and obnoxious. There is so much gender backlog, there is so much gender prejudice to be solved. Much sex obscurantism to be combated. The process must begin with excess in the short run and things will even out in the long run.
I it very interesting to see your views and thank you for the feed back.
Sara Rey :- I agree with you all completely. Even in Sri Lanka our former president was a powerful woman Former President Chandrika Bandaranayke. But my thought was with regard to those who still think women are not strong enough for hard jobs.
Roulene Omogi :- I see your opinion. Yes, a mother's role is irreplaceable. But I have witnessed, where certain companies take this as a weakness. Meaning to say that, since a woman will become a mother someday, some companies are reluctant to open job opportunities for women. Which will have a great impact on the economy.
Hi,
Raviendra, I completely agree with you but I have to say that although nowadays gender-based discrimination is still existing, if we compare to few years ago, it has improved a bit; not enough obviously, and not in all jobs, but it is starting. For example, there are a lot of men working as hairdresser, flight assistants, cleaners, dressmaker, nurses, etc, jobs that were considered done by women. And I know that the process is slow, but women start doing jobs as directors, managers, Prime Ministers, etc. For instance Angela Merkel as the first German Chancellor or Cristina Fernández as Argentina´s president. Women are improving and achieving the same position as men, it is just question of time and hard work.
I'm of a different opinion though with regards to your concern. Remember the woman naturally is the care giver to children, when a child cries, it's only the mother who can quieten him/her since she has the breast milk, having some soft jobs set for the women may not really mean that the women are prevented from aspiring for greater opportunities and I feel it only serves to lower the competition with men everywhere we turn. I agree with you on your demand for partnerships and special provisions for women. Lets agree Raviendra that we can not equally compete well with the men if we still have to retain our position in the society as wives and mothers.
